On one hand, a medical practitioner, researcher or academic may have an in depth knowledge or experience with regard to a given subject. On the other hand authoritative insight can come from a “lay” person with little or know academics or schooling in the same subject, but for the personal experience by which they too became "authoritative" by virtue of experiencing first hand the malady, condition or affliction.
